Proxies just don't seem to work?

Hello all,

I started looking at putting up some proxies of my own, and trialled a few scripts. But whenever I try going to one of the big sites...basically the ones proxies are aimed at like you tube, myspace etc. The functionality is very limited. I keep getting this error whenever I click on a video:

Quote:
Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player. Get the latest Flash player.
Now, I'd love to think it was just me, but I've been over a whole heap of sites now, and I get the same from established sites too. Am I missing something? Is it worth setting up proxies anymore or have the big sites coded in measures to defeat them?

If it is worth my while - what script is the best. I have tried PHP proxy and freeproxytemplates with the results above.

Thanks

If you go on proxy.org some one has php proxy 5b2 with youtube enabled. It uses a custom player.

Why would you want to allow youtube?

I guess that shows my green-ness in the industry? Presumably most proxies aren't used for YouTube because it burns bandwidth?

I have my working proxy up here: Papa Smurfs First Proxy

Here's all my newbie questions(might as well get them out of the way in one hit):

1. Currently the adsense ads are picking up on the smurf content. What is best to target in terms of conversions? Ads for other proxies?
2. Are the adds below the address bar on proxified pages showing up okay for everyone?
3. Is replacing adds in proxified pages with your own possible/ethical/legal?
4. What is the life expectancy of a proxy?
5. What ways do administrators find proxies to add to their blacklist?
6. Do admins tend to block by address or by IP?
7. I notice a strong tendency towards having the input form below the fold. Is this the best strategy - hitting them with a page full of advertising?
8. Anything else I should know to give my proxies the best chance of success?

Thanks for your time,

Papa Smurf.

Well the main reason most users come to your site is to bypass filters (we hope :P) so other proxy related content in theory should convert better.

Yeh, 2 468x60 adbrite blocks for me.

It is possible, but unethical. For that reason solely, I won't give you the logic behind a code to do that.

4. What is the life expectancy of a proxy?
They last from anywhere from a few weeks (for popular ones) to a few months for the slower ones.

5. What ways do administrators find proxies to add to their blacklist?
They'd be using the main baskets such as Proxy.org to quickly ban them. They would also monitor their traffic (if they are good admins) and see your proxy in there often and just block the IP/Domain.

6. Do admins tend to block by address or by IP?
Most by domain - first hand experience.

Lots of adverts tend to annoy the end user, however it is better for your revenue.

You would need to experiment with this over time for your particular audience.

Keep costs low, profits high. Your audience brings you money, so keep them in mind.
