JPG or GIF or PNG for static images?
|
|
I dont know much of difference, But which is best as per the image quality , I guess PNG is the latest compression technique out of the 3.
What and why should we choose 1 format out of them?
Which is technically better quality then other and which is Effecient and light weight?

Jpg's have the best Picture quality.
Gif's are better to use for websites's for better load times.
And i don't know about PNG's but I personally use it for a picture with a transparent background.

PNG's are also transparent. Make a avatar for your msn and make the background trasparent and save it as an png so you can see for yourself.

Why's that? I normally find that PNGs have smaller file size, and recently found out they are better for transparency too.

In order of preference I use:
JPEG (Generally use this 90%+ of the time!)
PNG (Only use for transparency, preferred over GIF for quality)
GIF (I feel the quality of GIF isn't up to par, and so only use when compulsary!)

I use jpgs as they have the best quality and gif is mostly used for animations and png is portable network graphics and id used where quality is not an issue but size is.

When it comes to quality I would choose either JPG or PNG. In fact I use these two methods most of the time with anything I go. I rarely use GIF anymore at all, and when I do it is generally to convert to another format.

Personally I use what ever ends up being smallest. Although I tend to use - GIF for little icons and images with less than 256 colours and most transparent items
- PNG for smaller images with more than 256 colours. Try and avoid using them for transparent areas as earlier version of IE (6 and below) have issues with PNG transparency (Think its just Alpha transparency though)
- JPG for photos and larger images that will compress well.
Saying that though I use Fireworks for compressing images as its easier to play around with palette size and compression rates and sometimes its the format you dont expect comes out smallest.
