I have been writing articles for my site only once in a week and the rest of them I get them from article directory. Then somebody told me that if Google noticed it then i would be penalized??? Is it true ??
No, there is no such penalty from Google. I would advice you that to be on safe side you should mention the source from where you have taken them. Such practice is not very helpful in increasing the PR of a site.

Why to take risk!! I would advice you to write your own articles as they will attract the search engines like magnet and it will increase the page rank and traffic of your site in no time.
Unique content is the best for your site. Like don said, the search engines will love it and crawl the new articles everyday. Make sure you provide that to the search engines and they will return more often.
i personally haven't heard of google penalizes those who don't have original content. it can't be possible in the world to have 1 site 100% unique. the internet is massive, so even by mistake you get to put the same articles like other sites. i guess is false.
