If your careful enough, you can certainly avoid getting cheated and scammed out of a deal.
It is hard to find websites which are worth reselling, or that could make enough profit to justify that use of your time.
Remember you want to be making above minimum wages if you decide to take it on as a full time job.
There are a few main things people will look at when buying sites:
- Page Rank
- Alexa Rank
- Domain Age
- Revenue (Daily, Monthly, Annually)
A good rule of thumb would be to sell for 9-months profit. So if I was selling guide-to-google.com (example) and it made $100 a month, I would sell it for $900.
When buying the site, you would want to make sure you would be able to increase the revenue (so you can make a profit). You would also want to make sure that there are no risks (such as the ones involved with proxies). If you can't make more money each month, then it's pointless. Increasing the monthly earnings by $10 will profit you by $90 when you sell it.
When making your changes, make sure you
SEO the site if it has not already been SEOd. You would probably want to expand on the content and build some more links (increase traffic, page rank and alexa). You may even want to add user contribution features such as comment boxes, forums etc which will allow your users to add content for you (bringing in traffic and revenue automatically).
I hope the above has helped as a rough guide (you need to make it work for you, not the industry).
