What is the length that you consider is too big. As I am getting long domains only and is it good to have some numeral in between or just characters.

It depends really.
For example, OnlineInsuranceBrokers.com would be worth x,xxx whereas google-hello-4-lol.info wouldn't be worth anything at all, infact it would be a liability.
As for characters mixed with numbers, unless its something like Games4u.com etc i would not recommend purchasing them.

It kind of depends on the keywords in the domain name as Shyam has said if you have a long targetted domain its really good.
A downside of a long domain name of course is the long it is the less catchy it is and perhaps even harder to spell.
In the example above you have Games4u.com if you say that over the phone does the user enter Gamesforyou.com, games4you.com, gamesfouryou.com etc.
Thats where the example of OnlineInsuranceBrokers.com works really well, its got good keyword coverage, easy to spell and as its a phrase someone would think about when looking for an online insurance broker its easy to remember.

I dont know anyone who would market and try to gain traffic to a website via phone communications.

Market perhaps not, but if you have perhaps cold called a potential client and they want to see your website its a lot easier to quote an easy to remember and spell name than a difficult one.
Also you have things like Radio, Podcasts even Television all spoken media (ok TV you could have it written as well) where how your URL sounds is important. The point I'm trying to make is how your domain performs offline is almost as important as it performs online for certain types of business.

If they get long, dont be tempted to add - between the words, that really decreases the value.

Agreed. Preferably short, pronouncable (or readable), continuous and memorable. I'd certainly try and avoid anything over about 10 characters unless it was a 'killer' domain name directly related to my niche.

Sticking to my example, games4u over gamesforyou. The marketability and brandability of the numerical connotation is far greater than that of the pure text version, both online and offline. This kind of a domain would create practically all of its revenue from its online performance. From the above quote, 'certain types of business' is a safe assumption however this would only be correct for businesses who make the majority of their profit offline rather than online. For example Argos (Argos.co.uk). You can purchase items online however their chain of stores would bring in the majority of profit.
I've gone off on a tangent, but I was in a typing mood.

in my opinion, long domains are those who include more than 1 word, separated or not by a comma. it's the worst decision you can make to have your domain multiple worded. also, a domain should have to be easy to remember, not to think at it 10 minutes before typing it into the address bar
