I personally think popups drive away visitors.
I personally would not add popups on a serious proxy, because I want people to come back and not go another proxy server that doesn’t have popups.

A great way to help build good backlinks to your proxy is by using squidoo. You can create a lens (page) on anything you want and also have free backlinks
I’m ranking 1 in google for some terms that are sending thousands of unique visitors a month and it is one of the ways i drove backlinks to the site
